Arwen's Commitment
Even though the Lord of the Rings trilogy is a dark, war-torn movie, love still manages to tell a story. Aragorn (Viggo Mortensen) and Arwen (Liv Tyler) had a love connection before the viewers even meet either characters. Before the Council of Elrond and the Fellowship was formed, a scene between the two characters reveal Arwen's commitment to her love for Aragorn. We see in the clip below that she gives him the Evenstar, an Elvish jewel of love, and would give up her immortality for love. This is an example of committed love in Marston and Hecht's Love Ways (1994). According to Guerrero, "Committed love is love that is based on commitment and involves experiencing strong feelings of connection, spending time with each other, and discussing the future."
Sam's Loyalty and Friendship
Frodo (Elijah Wood) and Sam (Sean Astin) were friends before the viewers are introduced to the characters. In the clip below Frodo decides to take the Ring to Mordor himself, but Sam thinks otherwise. He was not going to allow his friend of many years to go across Middle Earth alone. We find in the later two movies that Sam's loyalty to Frodo saves them both in their journey. Both hobbits express their friendship-love for each other through the quality time that they share throughout the movie (and the whole trilogy). This is an example of the love language of quality time.
